Bamboo Butterfly

a journey.

admin On January - 4 - 2013

There are days where I still pine for Taiwan. Times when I worry those precious memories are fading from my memory … but I know deep down they will always be there.

I hope I can go back in a year or so and say goodbye as it should have been.  I feel like I have this unfinished business with Taiwan.  I didn’t leave how I originally thought I would, and even if it’s as simple as writing “thank you” in the sandy shore along the Cingshui Cliffs, I think it needs to be done.

I’m making peace with being back in the Midwest and I’m even having some unexpected adventures here.  I’m a writer for a local newspaper and have plans to continue to hone my writing skills for larger goals.  I’ve met a wonderful man and I’m trusting that God will lead us in the right direction.

As I’ve mentioned before, I still have many untold stories about my time in Taiwan and I will continue to share them on this blog.  I also plan on finding a Chinese language exchange partner in the area, so I will keep everyone up to date on how my Mandarin speaking skills continue to progress (or fail!).

And, of course, I will always continue my quest for authentic Chinese/Taiwanese restaurants here in the states.

Thank you for sharing in my adventures and I hope you continue reading!

Happy New Year everyone!

    Hi, Rhonda,

I happened to visit your site, and it is very touching to read your articles of your life in taiwan.

I think your site giving western people lots information and feeling about taiwan – as a Taiwanese, I am really happy to see this and I do think taiwan is a really nice place to visit/travel/live. (although I currently live and work in London.)

Here is a site I used to tell my foreigner friends in taiwan, maybe it would be quite useful for them who want to find a job in taiwan. I don’t know if you would be interested in sharing on your site, but I would like to share with you.

Careerjet Taiwan – they are Job search engine, and they have english version. http://www.careerjet.com.tw/ (English) and http://www.careerjet.tw/ (Chinese).

The main job boards in taiwan don’t have english version, but hopefully this site can help people in taiwan a little bit.

Please keep updating this site, and i will follow it :)

    Wish you all the best.

    Viola

    Rhonda,
I am living in Tainan, south of Taiwan. I admire you can write down so many things you watched in Taiwan.
What you write lets me know how foreigners felt about Taiwan culture. Maybe we can make language exchange to practice speaking skill by Internet tools such as Skype.
    sincerely,
    Chunnai

  6. never been to Taiwan, though I’d love to, but this is certainly a heartwarming post and glad i’ve stumbled on it. I can somehow relate, it’s really hard to say goodbye to place that you’ve grown to love. I hope you’ll always treasure your memories of Taiwan, write them down or blog them so every once in a while it’ll make you smile. :) Goodluck on your Mandarin and stay happy!

      Hi Happy,

I’m glad you liked the post and glad you can relate. It is very hard sometimes when I think of Taiwan and of course, I hope to go back again one day. I think what scares me the most is those moments where it feels like it all was a dream … but I know I’ll always have the memories and I mean it when I say the country will forever be a part of who I am. Thank you for your suggestions and encouragement! God bless.
(By the way, I haven’t explored the Philippines much but I did love Palawan and Port Barton! What a wonderful place, and wonderful people).

Glimpses of Asia

Asia has always been fascinating to me. Though I’ve only been to a few countries in Asia, I’ve had some incredible experiences in those countries. In my opinion, Asia is much more exciting culturally and visually than many other parts of the world. Here are a few of glimpses of Asia through my eyes.   [...]

The evolution of a Taiwanese haircut and where to find an English speaking salon in Taiwan

I was recently recounting one funny Taiwan haircut incident to my mom and then realized how much I missed my old stylist, Eddie, who is the hair master at Mix & Match hair salon in Taipei. Though my first year in Taiwan I lived in Hsinchu, and the second year I lived in Puli, I [...]

The road to Hehuan Mountain (Hehuanshan)

One of my most unforgettable travel experiences while living in Taiwan was the day I drove up Hehuan Mountain for the first time. Hehuan Mountain, sometimes called “The Switzerland of Taiwan,” is located on the boundaries on Nantou and Hualien counties (two of the top most beautiful counties to explore in Taiwan). Hehuan Mountain was [...]
